Doberman Pinscher Breed Standard

According to the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) standard, the Doberman is:
  • a medium size dog
    • Males: 26-28" (ideal 27.5") at the withers
    • Females: 24-26" (ideal 25.5") at the withers
  • square and compact with effortless movement
  • elegant, proud, powerful, alert, and fearless
  • smooth, hard, thick, close-lying hair
  • 4 allowable colours; black, red, blue, and fawn, all with rust coloured markings on the muzzle, chest, legs, feet, underside of the tail, and eyebrows
  • the shape of the head should resemble a blunt wedge
  • ears may be cropped or natural
  • chest is deep and stomach is well tucked up
  • tail may be docked or natural, arching over the back
  • dew claws may be removed

"King" Dobermans are not a recognized breed or variation. Solid black and white, or albino, are not allowable colours and should not be bred.
